1) Brief description for those in a hurry
Measurement is only possible with charged batteries and a properly calibrated planimeter (Section 8)
2) General description
The HAFF Electronic Digital-Planimeter has been manufactured with great care
using the latest technology and to the very highest standards.
Although it is easy to operate please take the trouble to read these
instructions carefully. They explain the various measuring facilities and
studying them will ensure that you get the best service from the instrument.
3) Before measuring
Check the state of the battery - "Bat" might not be displayed
The work table should be horizontal and the working surface on which the
measuring wheel is to run should be clean and unbroken.
The pole arm (5) - or the roller (9), and the tracing arm (2) should be
approximately at right angles when the tracing lens (3) is in the centre of the
area to be measured.
Mark the start/finish point on the boundary.
Position the centre of the tracing lens accurately over the starting point.
4) Measuring
Using the tracing lens (3), trace the boundary of the area so that the small
ring in the centre deviates as little as possible from the line.
The measurement will always be positive whether you trace round in the clockwise
or anticlockwise direction.
See Section 6 for information on the measuring process..
5)Accuracy
The planimeter is a highly sensitive instrument and must be handled
carefully.
Because the measuring wheel is designed to move extremely easily it is mounted
in very special bearings which must not be subject to compesssion or shock.
The measuring accuracy of the instrument is ± 0,1 cm² at a scale of 1:1.
Human measuring errors can be reduced by taking the average of up to three
readings - see Section 7. Errors resulting from the work surface can be reduced
by calibration - see Section 8.
6) Normal measurement
| Activity | Button / information | Display | information |

| Clear memory | MR/MC | 000,000 cm² | |
Several areas can thus be added and subracted. A large area which would exeed the measuring range can be subdivided and the total area found by putting the parts into the memory.
The maximum display capacity is: 999999.
7) Average value - SCAL/AV
To reduce human error, the average of 2 or 3 readings can be found.
| Activity | Button / information | Display | information |
| 1st Measurement | START | 000,000 cm² | |
| Measurement | 023,400 cm² | ||
| Transfer first value | SCAL/AV | -23,400 cm² | - for 1st Measurement |

| Average value of the two | SCAL/AV | =23,500 cm² | = for 2nd Measurement |
| 3rd Measurement | START | 000,000 cm² | |
| Measurement | 023,800 cm² | ||
| Average value of the three | SCAL/AV | * 23,600 cm² | * for 3 Lines (3rd Measurement)) |
| Transfer to memory | HOLD M+ | as described in Section 6. |
The "average indicator" (1, 2 or 3 lines) will not be displayed if all 6 digit are used for numbers!
8) Calibration
The planimeter is mechanically adjusted and electronically calibrated.
The user can calibrate the planimeter to match the working surface in use by
means of the test area (8) supplied.
For greater accuracy in the calibration, trace round the test area twice, or
even three times.
Tracing completely round the area corresponds to an area of precisely 100.0 cm².
The automatic calculation in the planimeter is always based on a scale 1 : 1 in
the metric systems no matter what scales are in use. The appropriate factor
obtained by using the test area is calculated and stored when the CAL button is
pressed.
| Activity | Button / information | Display | information |
| Switch on | ON | CCCCCC or 1: 1 | etc. |
| Switch to calibration mode | CAL | CC0000 | |
| Planimeter in measuring position | START | C 0000 | |
| Trace round the test area once (2x, 3x) | e.g. | C 0980 | (1960/2940) |
| Store the factor | CAL e.g. | 1: 1 cm² | ect. |
| (if outside range 900 till 1100, 1800 till 2200, 2700 till 3300) |
E ( ERROR ) | if exceeded |
This ensures that all subsequent measurements made on this document, at any scale, can be made accurately.
a) Calibration for distorted drawings
1st possibility: e.g. If the following values are produced by measuring the
drawing:
| Theoretical | Actual | Ratio = Actual/Theoretical | |
| x-direction | 100 | 102 | 1,02 |
| y-direction | 100 | 96 | 0,96 |
Calibration measurement on the drawing using the test area (as above) C 0980
Corrected calibration 980 x 1,02 x 0,96 = 960 to three figures (with
calculator).
Set the required factor by moving the display to C 0960 einstellen. Store the
calibration factor by pressing the CAL button.
2nd possibility:
Plotting a required area on this surface of 100 cm² with a distorted scale:
e.g. 10,2 cm x 9,6 cm. Calibration as described in Section 8, but by tracing
round this drawn area, rather than round the test area.
b) Calibration on the basis of a given area
Calibration using the test area gives a value of C 0980.
The correct size of the area is known to be e.g. 58,0 cm².
Measuring the area gives a value of 60,0 cm².
The calibrating value C = 60x980 /58 = 1014
Set the required factor by moving the display to C 1014. Store the calibration
factor by pressing the CAL button.
9) Selecting the system of units: metric or imperial
After "OFF", hold the M/E button down and press the ON
button. Release the M/E button when all the segments of the display appear..
The system of units is clear from the display - cm² etc. or sqinch etc.
10) Scale selection
The actual area is calculated electronically in the planimeter depending on
the scale in use
The following scales are permanently stored:.
Metric 1: 1/ 2/ 2,5/ 5 mm² or cm², 1: 10/ 20/ 50/ cm² or m²,
1: 100/ 500/ 1000/ 2500/ 5000 m² or ha, 1: 10000/ 25000/ 50000/ ha or km²

Imperial 1:1/ 4/ 12/ 16/ 24/ 48/ 96/ 120/ sqinch or sqfeet, 1:
792/ 1200/ 1250/ 2400/ sqfeet or acres, 1: 39600/ 7920/ 63360 acres or
sqmiles
free - see Section 11
| Activity | Button / information | Display | information |
| Switch on | ON | 1: 1 cm² | etc. |
| SCAL/AV | 1: 2 cm² | ||
| SCAL/AV | 1: 2,5 cm² | ||
| repeat again | SCAL/AV | .......1: 500m² | etc. |
Keep pressing the SCAL/AV button until the required scale appears.
11) Programmable scales
Any scale ratios can be stored after the fixed ratios shown in Section 10.
Possible ranges:
Metric 1: 0,01 to 9,99 mm² or cm², 1: 10,00 to 99,99 cm² or m²
1: 100 to 9999 m² or ha 1: 10000 to 999900 ha or km².

12) Unit selection - UNIT
2 adjacent units can be selected at will. The measurement will automatically shift to the upper unit if the measurement overflows the display using the lower unit.
13) Battery monitoring
The symbol "Bat" indicates that the battery will soon need recharging.
14) Battery charger
The charged battery will allow 30 hours continuous operation.
Charging:
15)Care of the battery
The power supply is switched off after 1 minute if the measuring wheel is not
moved and the display shows ----- .You can restart by pressing the ON button.
If no buttons are pressed, the display will switch off after 5 minutes. Any
measurements which have not been stored in memory will then be lost. The other
values such as calibration factor, variable scales and memory contents are
retained.
16) Measuring range
At a scale of 1:1 the maximum area per measurement is 2700 cm²
If this is exceeded the error message E will appear in the display.
In this case divide the area into smaller parts and put them into memory as they
are measured.
17) Display range
= 999999
18) Incorrect operation
If you make a mistake when tracing, start again by pressing START.
If you press the wrong button, start again by pressing ON.
Do not use the instrument with the charger connected.
19) Data output RS 232
Socket no. 6 is used for the charger lead and data output using the interface
no. 322.
After pressing the Hold M+, Hold M- or the MR/MC button the measuring data will
be transmitted to the excel spreed sheet of a computer.
